Polonnaruwa is a city in the North Central Province of Sri Lanka. The second most ancient of Sri Lanka's kingdoms, Polonnaruwa was first declared the capital city by King Vijayabahu I in the 11th century AD and maintained its status until the 13th century.

The acient city is really worth a visit! The site here is much better maintained than in Sri Lanka's other ancient city Anuradhapura. Polonnaruwa town itself does not have much to offer. However, it has nice tanks (artificial lakes built by ancient kings) with nice hotels around it. Especially … Matthias H.
Its well worth a visit to the Culture and Heritage Museum in Polonnaruwa. Jess F.
This sprawling complex takes some time to explore by foot or bicycle. Be wary of some of the hawkers who are quite numerous on the grounds as the quality of some of their goods is questionable. I agree that the museum is a must visit, its very well done. D. G.
