Founded as Sopianae 2000 years ago by the Romans and known as Fünfkirchen by the Germans, today's Pécs is a pleasant small university town that has largely escaped the ravages of both communist-era architecture and modern-day mass tourism. Pecs is home to wonderful Paprika - Hungary's national dish. Pick some up at a the central market - it lasts for years (really) and makes a good, cheap gift for friends back home. Michael M.
