Amazing!!! Depends on what you want, accommodation much cheaper in the modern city, but more and more boutique places down in the caves are worth investigating. DO NOT WEAR HIGH HEELS.

A holy place. Go to Sasso Caveoso (poorer part of the old Matera) to understand. Its the place where "The Passion of Christ" (Mel Gibson, 2002) has been realized. Bring some time with you, and go by foot.
