León is one of the oldest cities in Nicaragua. León is named after León, Spain. After independence, the elites of León and Granada struggled over which city would be the capital. When staying in León, we recommend Best Western Las Mercedes Leon.

I travelled alone in Leon and as a woman I felt pretty safe. Avoid walking around alone late at night though as you will probably get hassled...and around the bus station/ markets at night is a bit dodgy. Bessie O.
