This is a really fun town to get lost in and just wander the streets. Keep in mind that 4 is the Japanese version of 13 and a lot of hotels don't have a room 4. (so if you are booking for a group rooms 1-5 are only 4 rooms, often.)

I used to live here. If you go there make sure you go during the festival seasons. Small beautiful town with lots of Festival action. The best are the hand held firework festivals. All other major cities do modern day fireworks but Takayama does special hand held ones, which look awesome!

Takayama is famous for its Onsen (hot springs) and so I went to one and it was great. The price was okay (1000¥) and it was really relaxing.
